MVV Energiedienstleistungen begins operation of an environmentally friendly industrial heating plant
Plant costing €30 million generates electricity at Gersthofen industrial park using CHP technology and steam from RDFs
MVV Energiedienstleistungen began operation of a second industrial heating plant at Gersthofen on 20 July 2009 which generates electricity from environmentally friendly combined heat and power (CHP) from refuse-derived fuels (RDFs) and most importantly, steam. The company, which belongs to the MVV Energie Gruppe, invested approximately €30 million in the innovative plant.
The power plant supplies 12 companies at Gersthofen industrial park with a total of 4.4 megawatts of electricity and 43 tonnes of steam per second. The industrial park operates Industriepark Gersthofen Servicegesellschaft (IGS), a subsidiary of MVV Energidienstleistungen GmbH with the help of 1,450 staff.
“The MVV energy group recognised at an early stage, that climate protection and energy efficiency are challenges with which we, as energy suppliers and providers are particularly faced and for which we have to identify solutions,” explains Dr Werner Dub, member of the Board of Directors of MVV Energie AG, Mannheim during the ceremonial launch. Industry in particular, has to continue to increase its energy efficiency – provided it is cost-effective as it is at Gersthoffen, even exploring alternative fuel sources,” stressed Michael Lowak, Managing Director of MVV Energiedienstleistungen GmbH. Bavaria represents a key region where this commitment is being further strengthened and in which MVV Energiedienstleistungen is further investing along with partners such as the Bayerische Staatsforsten (Bavarian State Forest). “As IGS, we are strengthening our own competitiveness with this pioneer project and, by lowering energy prices, are also improving the economic situation of our customers. Furthermore, we are safeguarding the existence of the entire Gersthofen site with its 1,450 jobs,” added Heinz Mergel, Managing Director of IGS.
Refuse-derived fuels (RDFs)
Refuse-derived fuels are solids with average energy content. They contain combustible materials from municipal and commercial waste such as paper, textiles, wood and plastics. About half of the materials are made up of organic components. As of 2005, it is prohibited to deposit such materials in landfills. What once went unused and found its way to landfills will be used in the future to produce heat, steam and electricity. This has led to success in recycling waste using combined heat and power in a highly efficient manner. MVV Energiedienstleistungen also relies on the environmentally friendly method of generating electricity and steam from RDFs at its Korbach site in the state of Hesse. The power plant has supplied the Korbach plant of the automotive supplier Continental with electricity and more importantly, steam.
With annual revenue of 243 million euros and more than 850 staff members, the company MVV Energiedienstleistungen GmbH is among the leading energy providers in Germany. The company, which is part of the MVV Energie Gruppe, specialises in measures for optimising energy for municipalities, industry, the real estate industry and hotel sector, as well as care solutions for the operation of industrial parks, international consulting projects and site development. It operates approximately 30 biomass power plants and two RDF power plants in Germany.
